How to find winning products for Africa and the Gulf

Knowing how to find winning products isn’t about luck or a magic tool. With cash on delivery, a winning product is simply one that stays profitable per delivered order, after paying for the product, freight, the service center, ads and refusals. Plenty of products that go viral on video fail that math.

This pillar guide sets out a seven-step method suited to Africa and the Gulf: start from a visible problem, look for proof of demand, filter for COD constraints, work out the margin, check sourcing, adapt to the market and test small, with free and paid tools for each step.

How to find winning products: what counts as one with COD

In the model described in our guide on starting a COD ecommerce business without inventory, the product has to make it through a whole chain: ad, order, confirmation, delivery, collection. So a winning product isn’t the one that generates the most orders, but the one that generates the most margin on delivered orders.

In practice it ticks four boxes: it’s understood in a few seconds of video, it solves a problem people genuinely feel, it can carry COD costs without an unreasonable price, and it can be bought, shipped and sold legally in the target country.

How to find winning products: visible problem, proof of demand, COD filters, margin, sourcing, market fit, test
The method: each step rules out candidates before you spend on ads.

Step 1: start from a visible problem

Products that work in video ads show a before / after or a gesture that saves time, money or hassle. Ask three questions: is the benefit visible in under five seconds? Is the problem common in your country? Does the customer understand the price without explanation?

Avoid products whose value can’t be seen (invisible quality, long-term promised effects): they require a level of trust that cash on delivery doesn’t make up for, and they’re often subject to strict advertising rules.

Step 2: look for proof of demand

An idea is worth nothing without proof that people already buy. Three free sources are enough to start:

  • The [Meta Ad Library](https://www.facebook.com/ads/library/): filter by country and search your product type. An ad that has been running for weeks, in several variations, is a signal (not proof) that it’s profitable for the advertiser. Our guide on the Meta Ad Library covers the method.
  • The [TikTok Creative Center](https://ads.tiktok.com/business/creativecenter/): top-performing ads and trends, useful for spotting formats and angles that work; see also our guide on TikTok trends.
  • [Google Trends](https://trends.google.com/trends/): compare search interest by country over several years to tell a passing fad from lasting demand.

What you’re looking for: several different advertisers on the same problem (demand exists), but not a market saturated with identical copies at the same price (the spot is taken).

Step 3: filter for COD constraints

Knock-out filters for a COD product
FilterWhyWarning sign
Selling priceIt must cover product, freight, center, ads and refusalsThe local market already sells the same product far cheaper
Weight and volumeAir freight is billed by the kiloHeavy or bulky product at a modest price
FragilityBreakage means returns, disputes, refused parcelsGlass, ceramics, fragile electronics
Meta ad rulesSome products are banned or restrictedHealth, supplements, weapons, adult products, promised results
Import rulesCustoms, certificates, banned productsCosmetics, electronics, food: check before buying
Batteries and liquidsSpecial air transport rulesProducts with lithium batteries, liquids, aerosols
Brands and counterfeitsLegal risk and ad blocksA well-known brand’s logo or design

Meta’s Advertising Standards list prohibited content and restricted goods (tobacco, weapons, drugs, gambling, financial services, among others). Read them before choosing: a product rejected in ads won’t sell, and repeated rejections can hurt your ad account.

Step 4: work out the margin per delivered order

Before ordering anything, do the full calculation. Example for a product sold for $25 in Mauritania, with assumptions to replace with your quotes:

Margin per delivered order (example)
LineAssumptionAmount
Selling priceSingle-unit offer$25.00
Product landed at the warehousePurchase + air freight$6.50
Center feesParcel delivered in Nouakchott (GibShip indicative rate)$6.00
Ads per delivered orderSpend ÷ delivered orders$5.00
Margin per delivered order25 − 6.50 − 6 − 5$7.50
The $6 per-parcel fee in Nouakchott is the rate shown by GibShip in October 2026 (indicative). Other amounts are assumptions.

With $7.50 of margin, ad cost per delivered order only has to rise from $5 to $12.50 for you to make nothing. If the gap between selling price and fixed costs (product + center) is too narrow, no ad tweak will save the product: drop it. For the full calculation, see our COD profit calculation method.

Step 5: check sourcing

A great product you can’t get from a reliable supplier isn’t a product. Check availability on Alibaba or 1688, minimum order quantity, the real price at your volume, sample quality and production lead time. A service center can handle this: see our guide to choosing a COD fulfillment center, and our upcoming guides on Alibaba and 1688.

Step 6: adapt the product to the market

  • Language: video and page in your customers’ language (Arabic, French, English).
  • Local price: compare with what already sells in the country, in local currency.
  • Local use: power plugs, sizes, climate, seasons, holidays (Ramadan, back to school, year end).
  • Local competition: if ten stores sell the same thing in your country, find a different angle (bundle, use case, audience) or another product.

To choose the country itself, see our guides on selling online in Africa and COD ecommerce in the Gulf.

Step 7: score candidates and test small

Score each product on a simple grid, 0 to 2 per criterion, and only test the best:

Product scoring grid (fictional example)
CriterionQuestionScore (0 to 2)
Visible benefitIs it understood in under 5 seconds of video?2
Proof of demandSeveral active advertisers in the country?1
Margin per delivered orderStill positive if ads cost twice as much?1
LogisticsLight, compact, not fragile?2
ComplianceAllowed in Meta ads and at import?2
SourcingReliable supplier, approved sample?1
TotalOut of 129
An indicative grid proposed by ReadyStore, to adapt: a 0 on compliance rules the product out whatever the total.

Then test the best candidate with a small batch and a limited budget, sized with the method in our guide on COD startup costs. Write your stop rules before launching, and judge on cost per delivered order, not on order count.

The most expensive mistakes

  • Copying the viral product of the moment without checking it’s still profitable in your country.
  • Judging by order count instead of delivered orders.
  • Buying large stock before testing to get a better unit price.
  • Ignoring weight and discovering freight costs after ordering.
  • Picking a restricted product and losing days to ad rejections.

Key takeaways

To find winning products for COD, start from a visible problem, look for proof of demand in your country, drop whatever fails cash-on-delivery filters, work out margin per delivered order, check sourcing, adapt to the market and test small. Create your ReadyStore store to test each product with its own Pixel and track its real profitability.

Frequently asked questions

What is a winning product in COD dropshipping?

It’s a product that stays profitable per delivered order after paying for the product, freight, the service center, ads and refusals. It shows a clear benefit on video, has proven demand in the target country and can be imported and advertised legally.

How do I know if a product is already selling?

Search for it in the Meta Ad Library filtered by country: several advertisers, ads running for weeks and in several variations are profitability signals. Add the TikTok Creative Center and Google Trends to check that interest lasts.

Do I need to pay for an ad spy tool?

Not to start: the Meta Ad Library, TikTok Creative Center and Google Trends are free. Paid tools like Minea or Pipiads save time when you test many products, but they replace neither the margin calculation nor the test.

Which products should I avoid with cash on delivery?

Heavy or fragile products, those whose benefit can’t be seen, those that rely on a health or results promise, counterfeits, and those restricted by Meta’s ad rules or the target country’s import rules. Also check transport rules for batteries and liquids.

How many products should I test before finding a profitable one?

Nobody can predict that: it depends on the market, your creatives and your budget. The scoring grid exists to rule out weak candidates before you spend, so each test has a real chance. Set aside a test budget you can afford to lose.

You launch the store and the ads. The center does the rest.
