Private label products and white label: build your own brand
Private label products are made by a manufacturer and adapted for your brand; white label products are existing products you sell under your name, usually with your logo and packaging. For a cash on delivery seller, building a brand sets you apart from stores selling the same generic product, reassures customers and builds a customer base that comes back.
This guide explains the difference between white label and private label, the steps to brand a product bought in China, what it costs (MOQ, samples, packaging) and the rules to check before selling.
Private label products vs white label products
| Criterion | White label | Private label |
|---|---|---|
| Product | An existing product from the manufacturer’s catalog | A product adapted for you: formula, color, accessory, design |
| Customization | Logo, label, packaging | Product and packaging |
| Exclusivity | None: others can sell the same product | A variant specific to your brand, per the contract |
| Minimum order (MOQ) | Often lower | Often higher |
| Lead time | Short | Longer: development, approval, production |
| Risk | Low | Higher: stock specific to your brand |
For a first COD product, many sellers start with white label: logo and packaging on a product already validated by a test campaign. Private label becomes worthwhile when a product sells steadily and competitors copy the offer.
How to brand a product made in China, step by step
- Validate the product before investing in a brand: real sales, delivery rate, returns.
- Choose a supplier that customizes: on Alibaba, look for logo or packaging customization and ask which options exist (see our guide to buying on Alibaba).
- Write the specification: logo file, placement, colors, materials, packaging, leaflet, barcodes, language of the labels.
- Order customized samples and check them like a customer would: quality, finish, smell, durability.
- Approve production: quantity, unit price, lead time, payment terms, defect tolerance, all in writing.
- Inspect before shipping: yourself through a sourcing agent or an inspection service.
- Ship to the center in the country you sell to (see shipping from China).
How much do private label products cost?
The minimum order quantity (MOQ) varies hugely with the product and the level of customization: Alibaba listings range from a few dozen pieces for a simple logo to several hundred units for true private label. The only reliable figure is your supplier’s quote. The cost items to plan:
| Item | What it covers | How to reduce it |
|---|---|---|
| Samples | Customized product and shipping | Bundle several samples in one shipment |
| Customization | Logo printing, engraving, mold, printing plate | Start with packaging rather than the product |
| Packaging | Box, label, leaflet | One box size for several products |
| MOQ | Minimum quantity to buy | Negotiate a smaller first order |
| Inspection and freight | Inspection, shipping, customs | Group with other purchases |
Worked example (assumptions): 300 units at $3.20 with a logo, plus $0.40 of custom packaging, come to $1,080 of goods before freight. If each delivered unit sells for $25 or its equivalent in NGN, KES or AED, check with the COD profit calculator how many delivered orders it takes to pay back that stock before ordering more.
Rules to check before selling under your brand
- The brand name: check it isn’t already registered in the countries you sell to, then protect it with the national office; WIPO’s Madrid System lets you seek protection in several countries.
- Labeling: required languages, composition, warnings and contact details depend on the country. In the European Union, the General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 requires, among other things, identifying the manufacturer or importer.
- Regulated products: cosmetics, toys, electronics or food supplements often need certifications or registrations: find out before ordering.
- Other brands: never imitate an existing logo, name or design, even loosely.

Summary
White label lets you sell a product made in China under your name quickly; private label products make it truly yours, with more investment. Validate the product first, write a specification, insist on samples and inspection, and check the rules of the country you sell to. To compare buying platforms, see Alibaba, 1688 or AliExpress. Frequently asked questions
What are private label products?
They are products made by a manufacturer and sold by another company under its own brand, with the product or its packaging adapted for that brand. The seller defines the specification and handles marketing; the manufacturer produces it.
What is the difference between private label and white label?
With white label, only the outside changes: logo, label, packaging. With private label, the manufacturer also adapts the product itself, such as its formula, color or an accessory. Private label is more distinctive but usually needs larger quantities.
What is the minimum order for private label products?
It depends on the product and the customization: from a few dozen pieces for a simple logo to several hundred for an adapted product, according to supplier listings. Negotiate a smaller first order and get the minimum confirmed in writing in the quote.
Do I need to register my brand?
It’s strongly recommended before investing in packaging and marketing. Check the name is free in the countries you sell to, then register it with the national office; WIPO’s Madrid System lets you extend protection to several countries.
Do white label products work with cash on delivery?
Yes: a visible brand reassures customers, which can help confirmation and delivery, and sets you apart from stores selling the same generic product. Start with a product already validated in a test to limit stock risk.
